About Pekerti

[edit] What is the project?

We have been contacted by an Australian who is volunteering with Pekerti, named Anton Clark. He is overlooking a plan to help Pekerti diversify into food markets; namely, cashews, palm sugar, cocoa and vanilla pods. The producer groups already have an organic certification but are looking to Fairtrade to access this market.

[edit] What is Hooked's role?

Anton has requested external help to assist in the meeting of Fairtrade requirements for each of these products and to assist in the marketing/promotion of the products in Australia.

To make this project come to fruition Pekerti needs assistance for developing food products. The farmer groups in most cases have organic certification but now need an volunteers who can design a suitable food product(s) and get that to the market. Ideally Pekerti would be the wholesaler and exporter as it is already a recognized and long establish Fair Trade market access provider.

Can you play a part in designing a farm gate product into a marketable retail product; do you have skills in food safety/handling or trade regulations in food importing?

[edit] What is the current situation with Pekerti?

Unfortunately, many of the producers working with Pekerti come from the earthquake affected area of Yogyakarta on the island of Java, many artisans have lost their lives and livelihoods. The immediate focus naturally has been on providing relief and aid to the struggling population, but there is optimism for getting the business side of things set up and returning to normal as soon as possible.

Pekerti with German NGO The Johanniter are building 500 temporary houses in Yogyakarta for poorer farmers and bottom of the supply chain craft producers. Many of the producers are not Fair Trade producers but Pekerti feels it can not discriminate people in need to weather they are Fair Trade or not.

Homes for micro and home based industry are a fundamental part of business/production. With no house an artisan has no where to produce. With no where to produce an artisan has no income to rebuild their home. This project is of a huge importance for the emotional and economic recovery of earthquake effect craft producers.
