Hooked is a student based, Not-For-Profit organisation. We operate as a trans-Tasman network that seeks to help coordinate and assist existing groups and aid in the formation of new ones. Through our website and campaigning materials, such as T-shirts, information guides, DVDs and postcards, we seek to serve as an information resource for trade justice advocates.

Hooked was established in 2004 at the University of Melbourne. In its short history it has grown quickly and there are now Hooked clubs in schools and universities in most Australian states as well as New Zealand. In 2005 Hooked officially became a registered not-for-profit as well as the official student movement of the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ). Hooked is also endorsed by Oxfam Australia (Community Aid Abroad) Hooked is sponsored by the following Australian Fair trade companies: Etiko, Cocolo, Universal Village and Gigante Coffee.

The day to day activities of most Hooked clubs include:

  • Encouraging University cafés, shops and cafeterias to stock Fair trade coffee. For example at Melbourne university Hooked has successfully campaigned to get 8 cafés to serve fair trade coffee.
  • Holding information sessions and other events such as film screenings or guest speakers on campus to help educate people about Fair trade
  • Running stalls on campus providing people with information about Fair trade, asking people to sign petitions and selling Fair trade products and Hooked “Liberate your Latté” T-shirts.
  • Hooked clubs have also been active in supporting the Make Poverty History campaign, selling wristbands and supporting the 2006 Stand-up Campaign.
  • Postering and chalking to raise awareness about Fair trade
  • Approaching University or school staff about stocking Fair trade products in their staffrooms
  • Working with other clubs on campus and other groups such as Oxfam: Community Aid Abroad and Oaktree
  • Social Actitivities and Fundraisers
  • Approaching roasters and other coffee companies about providing a Fair trade option
  • Monash University has been working with the Fair Trade Association of Australia to become Australia's first ever official Fairtrade University

Students are often drawn to Hooked because they feel like its activities are actually making a difference. Fair trade is still relatively new in Australia, however awareness about Fair trade is steadily growing. Demand for Fair trade coffee is also growing but there is still Fair trade coffee which is sold at market price because not enough people are asking for it. We feel that by telling people about Fair trade and by getting Cafés and roasters to sell Fair trade we are helping to correct this imbalance.

WHY HOOKED?

Hooked: Students for Trade Justice is about facing the reality that we are all to some degree “hooked” into a cycle of consumerism, and millions of producers worldwide are “hooked” into a cycle of oppression, and that these feed into each other. We are about “unhooking” ourselves and producers from this system by campaigning for change and by making life decisions to counter this cycle.

Being an affiliate of Hooked: Students for Trade Justice means being a part of a movement of people committed to this process, who support and challenge one another, and encourage others to “get unhooked”.
