A GUIDE TO HOOKED

THE GRASS ROOTS: OUR AFFILIATES

Hooked: Students for Trade Justice is sustained by its affiliates all over Australia and New Zealand. Student trade justice activists are at the forefront of the fair trade movement in Australia and New Zealand. This movement continually strengthens the wider community’s understanding, appreciation and support for trade justice and contributes significantly to the growing availability of fair trade products.

Hooked affiliates can be either individuals or groups, and can be those seeking to begin a trade justice campaign, or can be part of an already-initiated campaign, which intends to engage in trade justice and/or fair trade action or education as part of their activities.

Hooked affiliates are autonomous organisations or individuals with the aim of advocating trade justice and promoting fair trade products, policies and principles. Hooked affiliates are welcome to use “Hooked” in their group name, so long as it is differentiated from “Hooked: Students for Trade Justice” as a national organisation, e.g. “Monash University Hooked”.

Hooked: Students for Trade Justice is about facing the reality that we are all to some degree “hooked” into a cycle of consumerism, and millions of producers worldwide are “hooked” into a cycle of oppression, and that these feed into each other. We are about “unhooking” ourselves and producers from this system by campaigning for change and by making life decisions to counter this cycle.

Being an affiliate of Hooked: Students for Trade Justice means being a part of a movement of people committed to this process, who support and challenge one another, and encourage others to “get unhooked”.

The Hooked movement is a place where you can discuss new ideas, debate the difficult issues, and gain a variety of skills and experiences like team management, public relations and international development. Ultimately, being an affiliate of Hooked: Students for Trade Justice is about playing a part in achieving concrete change.

Support for Hooked Affiliates

Hooked affiliates are able to share in the growing student network, contribute to and share in the body of campaigning resources, gain leverage through collective power, along with support and encouragement from other campaigners.

Hooked: Students for Trade Justice has received support from the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ) and from Oxfam Australia so that we may enhance the student fair trade movement by networking across Australia and New Zealand. As a not-for-profit organisation we have the capacity to receive financial support for our sustainability, which has become increasingly necessary for some affiliates since the implementation of Voluntary Student Unionism.

As a member of FTAANZ we have been able to develop alliances with fair trade traders and Non Government Organisaions. This then creates links between the demand for fairly traded products, the availibilty of such products and those who are campaigning for fair trade and trade justice.

Some other benefits of affiliation include:

  • An introductory kit full of organising tools and information.
  • Connection with a state coordinator who can provide support, advice and help affiliates to link up with other affiliates with similar goals.
  • Website space for organising and informing.
  • A Hooked: Students for Trade Justice email address.
  • Opportunities to join in international student delegations to producer communities.
  • Chances to collaborate on developing national campaigns through committees, and develop and share in the resources developed, for example, postcards or stickers.
  • Opportunities to collectively purchase items such as campaign t-shirts or fair trade coffee.

Semester Feedback by Hooked Affiliates

The Semester Affiliate Feedback Form is a crucial way for Hooked affiliates to inform others of their successes and challenges and their upcoming plans. Hooked: Students for Trade Justice shares these experiences with others engaged in similar struggles and shares your achievements with the rest of the movement. Hooked: Students for Trade Justice hopes to understand what resources we can make available to help our affiliates achieve their goals. We also hope to involve Hooked affiliates in contributing to or establishing national initiatives that are of interest to others.
